Not so lost yet...

Yesterday got our car, started to drive to Holbox, followed instructions on web for cutoff to reach the non toll road to get to Holbox... Supposed to cut off an hour... Web direction says you won't believe this road is where you should be. Correct! Minutes from the overdeveloped coast of Cancun we are up to our hubcaps in white milky puddles on a deserted dirt road with huts, dogs and after a while, a few trucks filled with locals, laughing at us.

Then found the main road... miles of mexico's 2 lane highway no shoulders tropical greenery reaching our windows.. . Lots of small towns and topes... And noticing that more and more of the local landholdings alongside, big yards around houses, which are gradually more and more traditional style Mayan style, are inches deep in water.... Then onto a side road which is a shortcut. whizzing past a  few barricades unexplained... Rrrrrrrrrk! Sudden stop due to road washout. Locals grinning at us on our long way back to the highway

We reached the ferry just in time... At sunset... Left the incredibly dirty once white rental car in the town of Chiquila with Pancho (literally, 50 pesos per day) and hopped right on the fast ferry over to island of Holbox! So beautiful and tranquil suddenly!

Some of the pleasures so far:  seeing ladies pushed around Yucatan towns by pedal cabs, yes there still are a few, seeing the tall thatched steep roofs same as Mayans always built.... The sound of the waves... The taste of good Sicilian wine, and great sicilian cooking, who knew!  The mafia here on Holbox!  Funny!
